Mailboxes

What comes to mind when you hear the word mailbox? Most people would probably just picture out a steel box that has no other purpose than holding mail for the people who own them. Yes, mailboxes can be quite boring, to put it bluntly. In fact, you would seldom see residential mailboxes that have designs and decorations of some sort. But this does not really have to be the case at all times, you know. There is so much more to mailboxes than the mere act of locking mailboxes. Let us then tackle the possibility of decorating mailboxes. This is because decorative mailboxes can and do exist.

You may just think that there is absolutely no need to decorate mailing boxes. This may be true for some people. But if you think about it, the first thing a person would see of your house is your mailbox. Isn’t that right? And what would a cluttered, rusting mailbox say about you, your house, your lifestyle? Yes, there just might be a teeny weeny need to decorate your mailbox.

So, how do you go about it? First off, there are certain rules you should remember when decorating your mailbox. The USPS, or the United States Postal Service, actually has certain requirements regarding the shape, size, flag, and the opening of your mailbox. The USPS does not really ask fore residents to display their names on their mailboxes. Thus, you won’t have to worry about this anymore. But the USPS does require that your mailbox have your house number on it. And your mailbox has to be positioned in such a way that your number would be on the side that faces your mailman. If your mailbox is not situated on your street, if it’s a bit far from your house, then you should also have your street address on it. Also, the USPS prohibits you from using your mailbox as a means of advertising. Offensive pictures, designs, and vandalism are strictly prohibited as well.

Aside from these regulations and restrictions, you are then free to decorate your mailbox any way you want. If you do not have any idea as to how to decorate your mailbox yet, then these suggestions just might be helpful. A lot of people prefer to have a design or decoration that matches that of their houses. This is quite understandable because your mailbox is still technically part of your house. You can choose colors that would complement your house. But if you want something else, like you want to choose a theme or concept that you really fancy, then you can do this as well. If you are an avid fan of soccer or basketball, you can decorate your mailbox with such related designs. There are also people who paint a small scene or small part of their house onto the mailbox. This way, their houses are more accentuated by the miniatures placed on their mailboxes. And while we’re on the subject of painting, you should remember that paint holds quite well on metal mailboxes. But when it comes to plastic mailboxes, it’s a totally different story. If you live in an area that experiences hard weather conditions, then you just might want to skip the idea of painting your mailbox altogether. The paint would not survive these weather conditions at all.

If you are not the artistic type, or if you are not that good at painting, you can still decorate your mailbox. One popular way of doing this is by covering your mailbox with stickers all over. There are stores that actually sell pre-printed stickers that bear scenes and landscapes on them. They would come as puzzle pieces of some sort. All you have to do is follow the instructions that come along with the set. And you can have a fully-designed mailbox in no time at all.
